Usually, what I do is, as the first step, to obviously back up my data to a secure location and restore it when I get my new device.
To erase the data from my old device, hard-resetting or factory resetting is the best way to go. Make sure all the data has been erased.
Next up is to remove the SIM card or SD card if you have any. Make sure to deactivate accounts as well, and verify if the device’s storage was encrypted for more security before resetting.
