Avoid Wi-Fi-Enabled CCTV Systems
As a cybersecurity professional and a father keen on protecting his home and family, I have used a fair number of CCTV and home-camera systems in my time. With the rise of smart CCTV, especially the Ring Security Camera range, it is important to note one fundamental flaw—they operate on your home Wi-Fi network. That in itself never used to be a problem until criminals started using rather “James Bond”-style contraptions called ‘jammers.’ The jammer emits a frequency range similar to the device it is trying to affect (in this case Wi-Fi), resulting in the loss of Wi-Fi network and everything connected to it, including your home CCTV system.
These jammers have been around for a long time—the Nazis used them during World War II to jam radio broadcasts from the BBC and other radio stations of the Allied nations. In recent years, they have been ‘consumerized’ and made readily available online to everyday people (and low-level criminals) via places such as Amazon for as little as £25. Given their price point and availability to criminals, thieves are using these extensively to switch off your CCTV before stealing cars, breaking into your house, and other crimes. This is critical because it essentially renders the purchase of Wi-Fi-based products like Ring completely useless—for the one hour that you want your home camera system working the most, it is rendered entirely inoperable.
I personally had a work colleague who had his high-end Jaguar 4×4 stolen in Brentwood, Essex, right outside of his house in the early hours of the morning. They found their Ring Camera had turned off for the hour that the theft occurred and so went to inquire with neighbors to see if their CCTV had captured the thieves. The thieves’ jamming device had affected all surrounding houses such that there was no footage of the theft whatsoever. They had nothing to show the police or their insurers.
As such, it is important in this day and age to never rely on Wi-Fi-enabled CCTV, and instead opt for a wired CCTV system. It is more expensive but well worth the extra investment to have that CCTV system working when you want it the most. I have the UNV 5MP Light Hunter range home camera system installed, which can be accessed via your smartphone from anywhere, anytime. Importantly, I know if thieves come to our property and try to use a jammer it won’t work and we will have the footage to pass on to law enforcement and our insurers.

Use Strong Passwords and Updates
A smart-home camera system has greatly improved my home security. It allows me to monitor my home from anywhere and alerts me to any unusual activity. A tip: Always use strong passwords and keep the system updated for better protection.

Capture Unexpected Activities
I have a 4-camera system installed with local storage to capture the type of activity you’d expect: car thieves, burglars, and the postman delivering my mail. The biggest benefit, however, has been the unexpected things they’ve captured: the drunken person stumbling and falling, a car hitting a lamppost and breaking it, or even a runaway trailer crashing into my neighbor’s front living room. Having a cost-effective way to capture this all is key to having confidence your home is secure when you’re there and when you’re not.

Strategically Place Cameras
My smart-home camera system has completely transformed the way I feel about home security. In the past, I always had that nagging worry when I left the house—did I lock the door? Are the windows closed? Is everything okay back home? Now, I can check in on my home anytime, anywhere, right from my phone. It’s incredibly reassuring to be able to see that everything is as it should be, whether I’m at work, running errands, or even on vacation.
One tip I’d offer is to strategically place your cameras to cover all the key entry points and areas of your home. I have one at the front door, back door, and even one overlooking my driveway. This way, I have a comprehensive view of my property and can monitor any activity.

Update Software Regularly
In my experience as a general contractor, smart-home camera systems have not only enhanced security but also improved home efficiency. Many of my clients have used these systems to monitor energy usage, track package deliveries, and even keep an eye on pets or elderly family members. This multifunctionality makes them an excellent investment for modern homes.
One insight I’ve gained is the importance of regular software updates for these systems. I always recommend choosing a brand known for consistent firmware updates and strong cybersecurity measures to ensure the system remains effective and secure over time.
For those considering a smart camera system, I suggest looking into models with advanced features like facial recognition and zone-based alerts. These capabilities can significantly reduce false alarms and provide more targeted monitoring, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the system.

Invest in Night Vision Cameras
Smart home camera systems provide invaluable peace of mind. Investing in cameras with night vision and motion-detection capabilities is essential for optimal performance. Strategically placing cameras to cover entry points and vulnerable areas is crucial. For instance, I was alerted to a package left on my doorstep, allowing me to retrieve it before it was stolen. This level of visibility has become increasingly important in today’s security landscape.
I strongly recommend investing in a system with robust cloud storage. While local storage is essential for immediate footage review, cloud storage provides an added layer of security and accessibility. In the event of a break-in or other incident, having your footage securely backed up off-site is invaluable. Also, cameras with two-way audio capabilities should be considered. This feature allows you to communicate with visitors or even deter intruders without physically being there. It’s a small investment that can yield significant benefits regarding home security and peace of mind.

Integrate Cameras with Other Security
Smart home camera systems have considerably improved security, making houses more innovative and safer.
I’ve noticed a significant drop in unlawful intrusions in buildings outfitted with these systems.
These devices serve as both a deterrent and a first line of defense, capturing critical evidence that can be used during a breach.
For example, a year ago, we installed a high-definition camera system and new sliding doors in a client’s home.
Just weeks later, the cameras caught clear evidence of an intruder attempting to enter the backyard.
The alarm system, integrated with the cameras, quickly notified the homeowner and local authorities, preventing potential loss.
From a professional standpoint, I advocate combining camera systems with other home-security components, such as alarms and motion sensors, to create a layered defense.
Choose cameras that provide real-time streaming and mobile alerts so you can watch your house from anywhere.
To summarize, smart home camera systems provide not only peace of mind but also a practical solution to modern home security.
They enable real-time surveillance and, more crucially, allow you to maintain control over the safety of your house even when you are away.

Choose Weatherproof Cameras with Night Vision
Implementing a smart-home camera system has significantly enhanced our home security, particularly in monitoring our property’s extensive outdoor areas. As someone who’s passionate about creating beautiful outdoor spaces, I wanted a system that could protect our home without detracting from its aesthetic appeal. We installed weatherproof cameras strategically around our property, focusing on entry points and the areas where we have our most valuable water features.
The system has proven invaluable in several ways: Firstly, it’s given us peace of mind when we’re away. I can check in on our koi pond and ensure our pump systems are running smoothly, even when we’re on business trips. The motion detection feature has been particularly useful. We’ve set up custom alerts for different zones, so we know immediately if someone approaches the house or if there’s activity near our equipment shed. One unexpected benefit has been wildlife monitoring. We’ve captured fascinating footage of local wildlife interacting with our water features at night, which has actually inspired some of our newer, more nature-friendly designs.
A personal insight I’d share is the importance of proper lighting integration. We’ve synchronized our outdoor lighting with the camera system, so when motion is detected at night, subtle lighting activates along with the cameras. This serves as both a deterrent and improves the quality of nighttime footage.
My recommendation would be to choose a system with good night-vision capabilities and wide-angle lenses. This has allowed us to cover more area with fewer cameras, maintaining the natural beauty of our landscape while still ensuring comprehensive coverage. The initial setup took some time to get right, but the enhanced security and unexpected benefits to our business have made it a worthwhile investment.
