Recover Returned Charge Cables Safely

Running EV Cable Hub has made me a bit obsessive about not binning things that still have life in them, and the clearest example is what we do with cables and kit that come back to us. A charging cable returned with a scuffed case or a fault in the connector is not automatically scrap, and treating it as such is lazy and wasteful.

What we set up is a simple test-and-recover bench. Cables that come back get checked properly rather than written off on sight. Port Analytics History Into GA4 Reports

When Google deprecated Universal Analytics, many agencies decided to buy new reporting suites instead of reconstructing what they had. We refocused our old GA3 data foundation into GA4 by porting historical figures into Google Looker Studio reports tied to GA4 properties. This allowed us to retain 4 years of clients’ history when many agencies scrapped.

It took some work up front to rewrite data connectors and reconstruct attribution, but clients were able to retain history that their competitors could not offer because they wrote off old data.

We specifically retained an enterprise client at renewal because we could show 3 years of trend data and other agencies were only able to offer 12 months of GA4 data. Having that history made our retainer fee more justifiable than any shiny new feature would have.

Retooling what we had beat out buying new for every factor we cared about: price, client retention, and value added. Tech migrations are opportunities where agencies can either lose institutional knowledge or maintain it. In our experience, maintaining it is almost always more valuable than adopting whatever new platforms come next.

Yes. I tend to extend the life of technology by turning older devices into single-purpose workstations instead of replacing them as soon as they feel slow.

The entire foundation of Magic Hour is a repurposing story. When open-source AI video models first dropped, they were research tools. Raw, unwieldy, designed for engineers who could wrangle Python scripts and GPU clusters. Nobody was thinking about the small business owner who needs a product video by Thursday. I looked at that technology and saw something that could be repackaged into a creative tool for millions of people who would never touch a command line.

But the more literal answer: I’ve been extending the life of consumer hardware for years by offloading the heavy work to the cloud. I run Magic Hour’s entire development workflow from machines that would otherwise be considered outdated. The trick is treating local hardware as a thin client and pushing compute-intensive tasks, rendering, model inference, batch processing, to cloud GPUs that spin up only when needed. That single shift turned a three-year-old laptop into a perfectly viable production machine.

There’s a broader principle here I call “infrastructure arbitrage.” Instead of buying new hardware every cycle, you ask what the bottleneck actually is and route around it with software. When David and I were building our early prototypes, we didn’t go buy $10,000 rigs. We stitched together free-tier cloud credits, open-source models, and scheduling scripts that ran inference jobs during off-peak hours when compute was cheapest. We basically built a video generation pipeline out of spare parts and clever timing.

That mindset extends to how we build the company. We use AI to do the work of teams we don’t have. Instead of hiring ten engineers and buying ten workstations, two people plus AI tools accomplish the same output. That’s sustainability at the organizational level, not just the hardware level.

Turn Blog Metrics Into Competitor Intelligence

We hacked our blog analytics database into a competitor intelligence platform. It already tracked keywords, engagement, conversions, etc. for our content. Repurposing existing technology gave us competitive intelligence at zero cost.

We realized there were topics our competitors were missing that we could create content around far better than any competitor intelligence software we tried before. One of our clients’ competitors just wasn’t creating content around this cluster of highly converting keywords that all of our clients’ blogs were ranking for. Three months into publishing on these topics, we were the domain authority everyone was chasing, six months before they would’ve known it was there to begin with.

Command Adjustable Bed With Beduino

I was frustrated that most “smart” devices are controlled by third parties that can just up and brick the device really whenever they please, and that my remote-controlled bed company wanted $600 to make the bed “smart” and app-controlled. Revive Aged Laptop As Home Media Hub

I repurposed an older laptop I had previously used for my everyday work but had become too slow. Automate Portal Renewals And Trim Bloat

To be straight about it, I read this as resourcefulness more than the environmental kind of sustainable, but the instinct is the same: get more life and value out of technology you already have instead of buying new.

The best example at Eprezto is the renewal bots we built. Some insurers we work with have no API, which normally means a person logs into that insurer’s portal by hand and copies the renewal premium for every customer. Instead of waiting for those insurers to modernize, we built bots that log into the portal with our own credentials and pull the renewal number automatically. We repurposed a system that was never meant to be automated and turned a manual, error-prone task into something fast and reliable.

The second example is subtraction, not creation. Our page speed had quietly degraded, and the cause was third-party scripts we had bolted on over time, an unused heatmap, a duplicate analytics tag, an abandoned widget. Removing them recovered our Core Web Vitals scores. Now we run a quarterly audit of third-party scripts so the bloat does not silently pile back up.

The mechanism in both cases is the same. Before I buy or build something new, I ask whether I can extend or repurpose what already works. A bot on top of an old portal cost us a little programmer time and saved manual hours indefinitely. Deleting scripts cost nothing and gave back speed.

Newer is not the same as better. Most of the time the sustainable move, in every sense of the word, is to make what you already have work harder.

Running two bootstrapped companies means you get pretty creative about not spending money on things you don’t need to.

The most practical thing we’ve done is build internal tooling that repurposes existing infrastructure instead of buying new SaaS. At Pageloot we serve 20,000+ brands and a lot of the analytics and redirect logic runs on systems we’ve extended and patched over years rather than ripping out and replacing. Old code that still works is the most sustainable tech there is.

On the hardware side, I’ve been running the same development laptop well past the point most people would upgrade. A RAM upgrade and a clean OS install bought it another two years. Same with routers and networking gear, we’ve flashed open-source firmware onto consumer hardware to get better performance and longer support windows instead of buying new.

Living between Bali and Tallinn also forces some improvisation. Power fluctuations in tropical climates kill hardware fast. We use UPS units and good surge protection, which sounds boring but it’s genuinely extended the lifespan of equipment that would otherwise be toast after one bad storm.
